Skiing Travel Insurance Will Save You From Costly Medical Bills Should The Worst Happen.
January 16th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedI’d be surprised if most people who go on skiing vacations didn’t bother with any form of skiing travel insurance. I guess it depends on how you are taking your ski vacation. If it is part of a package that includes accommodation, skiing pass and lessons there is a good chance that you will be advised to take out insurance. With some companies they insist that you take out insurance knowing that the potential costs you have to face should anything happen would be prohibitive. However if you are getting to the resort by your own steam and have all your own equipment there is a good chance you won’t bother with insurance. Is this a good idea ? Well, probably not.
A skiing (or snowboard) vacation is probably one of the more riskier vacations you can think about doing. I’ve been on quite a few ski trips and have been fortunate enough to never have had more than the odd blister or sunburn. However accidents do happen and I have seen quite a few on the slopes and watched as people are taken down on a ski bed or even a helicopter in some cases. This will obviously cost money, as will the treatment for whatever injury the person may have. They may also have to spend time in hospital if the problem is serious. If there is no hospital in the resort they will have to be transported to the nearest hospital. This will all cost money and for some things, like helicopter repatriation, quite a lot of money. It makes a lot of sense to have this covered by an insurance company.
Strange as it may seem, a friend on mine was actually knocked down by a car when on a skiing vacation. He hadn’t even been skiing yet. I think it had something to do with cars driving on the different side of the road (and possibly a few drinks were involved but that’s another story). This was at night and everything was shut so he had to be transported to a hospital in the nearby town where he underwent scans and was treated for head injuries. He ended up spending a few days in the hospital and never ended up skiing for the whole time. Although he put a brave face on the whole trip, it was a wretched vacation for him. The only positive thing to happen was that all the hospital charges were covered by insurance. He also got something back because he didn’t ski. Had he not taken out ski travel insurance this could of cost him plenty.
